Running a day late…The next horror video of the day, for yesterday, is one of my favorite bands to emerge within the past few years. They’re bringing back old school thrash and have a wicked sense of humor, so today’s video is Municipal Waste’s “Wrong Answer”

This video rocks! It’s like the Scream of videos. A slasher video, with some funny kills. I love Question #2! He had it coming for giving THAT answer!

Stepping away from metal videos, we have Depeche Mode’s “Wrong” for today’s Horror Video of the Day.

This video is all kinds of awesome…It opens with a car driving backwards in some downtown area at night. Inside is a man that is unconscious. He awakes to find himself with his hands duct taped behind his back, gagged, and wearing a creepy mask. He struggles to escape, while the car hits other cars and a unlucky pedestrian!

This is the “Saw” of music videos and has a creepy, David Lynch type feel to it.

Halloween is coming! For the rest of October, I’ll be publishing a Horror Video of the Day. Starting off is Alice Cooper’s Man Behind the Mask from 1986. Alice Cooper had disappeared for a while in the 80s and came back with “Constrictor” in 1986. We have Alice, Friday the 13th, and great 80s cheese in this classic!

Just a quick post letting you know what’s coming. Some brand new Megadeth designs are available for pre-order. They are currently being printed and we should have them in stock the last week of August.

One of my favorite bands, Clutch, has new shirts available from their new cd, Strange Cousins From the West.

Finally, new Judas Priest shirts are available. Lots of designs that have not been available for a while, including Sin After Sin, Defenders of the Faith, British Steel, Screaming For Vengeance, and Rocka Rolla!

Vinyl at the Planet

Although we at Planet Caravan are mostly known for our rock merch such as shirts, we have been focusing on increasing our Vinyl inventory. Why Vinyl? There are a number of blogs that discuss vinyl vs. cd, but to me there’s something special with a vinyl LP, be it the artwork on the sleeve (which is really lost on cd’s) or the rawer sound. There’s something about listening to metal on vinyl. It just feels right!

For any collectors out there, almost all vinyl has limited pressings. On top of that, you have limited editions that may be numbered, or a rare limited color. You have 180g pressings for those of you that are audiophiles. And again, cd’s cannot replicate the awesomeness of a vinyl picture disc!

CD Review – Saxon “Into The Labyrinth”

To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of Saxon. The only song I really remembered was Denim and Leather, which I occasionally hear on Sirius radio. Even in the 80s, I was pretty indifferent. I was never motivated to go buy a Saxon album. However, I’ve heard good things about their recent stuff. This cd came in as a promo, so I thought I’d give it a listen. First, the CD cover is really cool. They’ve always had a killer logo! Now you have a diamond shaped portal, intertwined with dragons and skulls, with a labyrinth in the middle. In the center is an eye that’s staring at you! Very epic and metal!

First song, “Battalions of Steel” starts off strong. Totally not what I was expecting. Very power metal/symphonic metal sounding. Could easily be from a Blind Guardian album. Second song, “Live to Rock” IS what I expect. Very solid traditional heavy metal. Third song “Demon Sweeny Todd” actually has kind of an old-school thrash feel. Reminded me of something off of “The Dark” by Metal Church. Next, intro song “The Letter” leads into “Valley of the Kings,” another Blind Guardianish song. My favorite song is 7th song, “Crime of Passion,” which is heavy with a killer riff, catchy, very well written and should be on the radio today!

Overall the production is very good. Vocals are a bit scratchy, at times reminding me a bit of Brian Johnson. Songs are good, but pretty schizophrenic, changing styles after every song. If you’re into bands like Blind Guardian or old school 80′s heavy metal , you should pick this one up!

Reviews From the Vault – Badlands (1989)

I’ll be reviewing both new cd releases and a slew of older cds that I have in my collection. I have a ton of cds that either I haven’t really listened to or haven’t listened to in ages. First up is the self titled Badlands album from 1989!

I have it on cassette, but just picked it up on cd in a used cd store a few weeks ago. I remember when Ozzy fired guitarist Jake E Lee after The Ultimate Sin tour. Seeing Jake play live, I was blown away and couldn’t wait to see what he would do on his own. Jake hooked up with ex Black Sabbath vocalist Ray Gillen, future KISS drummer Eric Singer and Keel bass player Greg Chassion. This was in prime hairband time and shredders like Yngwie and Steve Vai ruled the landscape. So you would think this would be a shredtastic album, right? Nope. Like Paul Gilbert, with Mr Big, Badlands’ debut album has a bluesy, classic rock vibe. And partly because of this, it doesn’t sound dated like many albums from that time. It kicks off with Highwire, a Zeppelin-esque scorcher with a killer riff by Jake. Jake works some acoustic magic with Jade’s Song, which leads into the heavier Winter’s Call. Ray Gillen sounds great throughout the cd. There’s really not a bad song. There’s a strong Zeppelin influence heard, mainly due to Ray’s vocals, but they’re not ripping them off like Kingdom Come. At the time I was a bit disappointed because it was not the type of sound I was looking to hear from Jake, but it really stands up today as a solid release.

Since everyone else is doing it…we might as well join the blogosphere! Actually, I’m totally pumped about our new blog! I’m Brad, founder of Planet Caravan Music and Comics. Our niche is rock, punk and metal shirts and merchandise. I’m also a musician that has been playing in bands since high school days (and to give you an idea, I’m thirty-something, so I’ve been playing a while!) This blog will be regularly updated, not only with news about our site (like new products, contests and promotions) but also cd and music reviews, metal news, advice for bands and musicians starting bands, and an occasional random thought.
